The aim of this course is to introduce and familiarize students with theoretical perspectives on law and lay the foundation for logical, broad-view and critical legal thinking, form their legal mind and deepen their legal understanding and knowledge in a global context. It is crucial to establishing law as an intellectual discipline rather than merely a form of professional training. It is endeavored to apprise students of the need of Legal Theory, its essence and content as a core pillar for further studies of various branches of law – constitutional, civil, criminal, international law etc. One of the purposes of this course is to form an independent legal thought of students and their ability to identify independently the problems of law, to use and analyze different sources of legal materials of national and international institutions and propose certain solutions to these problems. The course is designed to enable students to critically evaluate intuitions, assumptions and standard practices concerning law, to develop analytical skills and apply them in making material discriminations, to follow and engage in debates and negotiations, to develop a more rigorous understanding of what law is and what it can be made to do in global context.
